"Oklahoma!" was a giant step forward for the American
musical comedy. The plot based on Lynn Riggs' play, "Green Grow The Lilacs,"
contained real people, not just the painted mannequins that musical goers
were accustomed to. The songs were not interruptions; they advanced the
plot. The score wound up with many show stopping songs such as "Oklahoma!",
"Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," "People Will Say We're in Love," and many
more.
