Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by Hugh Wheeler
Directed
by Richard Maxwell
This is a show about love and relationships. Part of the
fun in watching this musical is seeing these relationships grow and change.
Stephen Sondheim did some very clever things in creating this lyrical masterpiece.
You may notice that much of the music sounds like a waltz. That is so because
the composer used the waltz meter or variations of it throughout. He also
used a "Greek Chorus" (The Liebeslieders) to comment on the story and filling
the blanks for us by telling us what happened in the past and setting the
stage or the mood. You meet this chorus at the beginning of the show as
they sing the "Overture", which is usually played by the orchestra in a
musical. The next thing you will see is the "Night Waltz" in which all
of the characters in the story are presented. Their movement is through
time and space, taking them to the play's beginning.
