Openly sentimental and cautiously suggestive, the characters
range from Villain Richard Murgatroyd to Sweety Nell Stanley. Father Stanley
is outraged throughout - at his supposedly wayward daughter and at Murgatroyd
(who attempts to steal home, fireplace and daughter).
Act II, which takes place in a New York Bowery bar, is
unquestionably the best.
